Our mission and efforts are described on this page. In addition, the page offers a brief account of the early history of Amnesty International.

Death_Penalty
Amnesty International opposes the death penalty. You will find explanations for its position as well as supporting facts. You may also follow links to connect with more information on Amnesty International USA's webpages.

Focus action (or adopted prisoner)
Group 361 usually tracks one case over time. The international organization provides the group with updates each month. The case may be for an ‘‘adopted’’ Prisoner of Conscience the group supports with letters of appeal, petitions, or another action.   You will find the facts and actions for the case with links to more information.

Letters
This page allows you to become actively involved in defending human rights from your chair at home. Group 361's efforts center on letter writing. These letters join with others from around the world. They have proven effective in combating human rights abuses. For example, they have discouraged torture and detentions for race, religious beliefs, and peaceably expressing viewpoints. On this page, group members share some of their most recently written letters so that you may adapt them to your style, print and mail them,. 

Human Rights Calendar
Throughout the calendar, information and links relate to key human rights dates and current actions you may join. You will find annually observed dates such as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It also provides links to Group 361’s meeting information, as well as the other current events -- such as a movie, a presentation or the annual April Get On The Bus trip for demonstrating in New York City, or a link to a petition or letter writing campaign.

Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a worldwide campaigning movement that works to promote all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards.

Children's Rights
Children also need special protection and care. Help end abuses of their rights, such as the recruitment of child soldiers. Children’s human rights are the blocks with which we build a human rights culture in societies and secure human rights for future generations. Take action to protect and promote the human rights of children around the world.

AI Successes
See how and where the hard work of writing letters and sending e-mails pays off! Read about some of the most recent victories in the cause of human rights. This page shares a little of AI's continuing record of achievement: Prisoners of conscience are released. Death sentences are commuted. Torturers are brought to justice. Calendar of Activist Events
Established to publicize and support activist groups in New York State, this calendar shares events and names of groups in the  Albany, NY and wider area. The website offers e-mail notification of events in your zip code area. The site also lists media resources and contacts useful in publishing events and meetings.

The Elders
The About Us page says: ‘‘The Elders are an independent group of eminent global leaders, brought together by Nelson Mandela, who offer their collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity.’’ Note: January 8, 2012, this site appeared to be blocked.

The searching tool is overseen by human rights experts specifically to meet human rights needs, and is reported as an easy to use multilingual human rights search engine.

Human Rights Links from the University of Minnesota
University of Minnesota provides links to one, international and national documents such as treaties, international law, and general references, as well as electronic links;  two, human rights organizations; three, Regional, that is broken down either by select countries or continents; and, four, specific topics of interest such as Business and human rights, Children and human rights, etc.

Once known as Lawyers for Human Rights, this group's mission is to build respect for human rights and the rule of law.  The group advocates for change internationally and nationally, using the courts, the media, and the pressure of communications to policy makers. 

Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
The American Civil Liberties Union is the nation's foremost advocate of individual rights -- litigating, legislating, and educating the public on a broad array of issues affecting individual freedom in the United States.

Free the Children
Free the Children, an international network of children helping children through representation, leadership and action.

Sierra Club
The website says: ‘‘ Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. We are the largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.’’ In past years, Amnesty International and the Sierra Club collaborated where environmental concerns impacted human rights.

Stop Genocide Now
The site gives the rest of us an opportunity to comprehend this human rights tragedy which has visited Darfur.

Tibet Online
Developed by the international Tibet Support Group community, this website provides information on the plight of the country , serving as virtual community space. The group has dedicated itself to ending the suffering of the Tibetan people by returning the right of self-determination to the them.

United Nations Human Rights Pages
The United Nations web site includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by its members in 1948 as well as other important human rights documents. The site notes the organization’s ‘lsquo;creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law, which, for the first time in history, provides us with a universal and internationally protected code of human rights, one to which all nations can subscribe and to which all people can aspire.’rsquo;

www.govtrack.us -- another site tracking your representatives
This 2006 Webby Award winning site allows you to check the voting record of your representatives in the United States Congress. Once the hobby of one man, the site states that it covers the ‘‘ status of U.S. federal legislation, voting records for the Senate and House of Representatives, information on Members of Congress, district maps, as well as congressional committees and the Congressional Record.’’

FactCheck.org
This site states that it ‘‘Monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by major US political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases.’’ You may be interested in the chart reflecting the federal budget: Fiscal Fact Check.
